On Tuesday, November 1st, Central School District 13J joined the November School Breakfast Challenge, a friendly, statewide competition to boost school breakfast participation.
By getting more kids to eat breakfast at school all throughout the month of November, our schools will be eligible to win one of four cash prizes.
There are a lot of great reasons to be excited about school breakfast, including:
  • Many kids who eat breakfast at school are more likely to eat fruits, drink milk, get greater variety in their breakfast, and have improved nutrition.
  • School breakfast protects children and teens from hunger and allows all students to focus on their studies rather than a growling stomach during the school day. With busy morning schedules, picky eaters, and long bus rides, it can be hard for all kids to get a nutritious breakfast in each day!
  • School nutrition is an important part of the school day and community. Peers, teachers, and staff can come together for a common purpose - breakfast!
Despite these great benefits, plus even more, like better attendance and test scores, only about 24% of all students eat breakfast at school in Oregon. We have a big opportunity to connect more kids to the program, and we’re joining in here at CSD13J!

We serve breakfast every school day starting at 7:30 am at Talmadge and Central and 7:45 am at each elementary school!

How can you help? Be sure to talk to your kids about school breakfast! Ask them if they know about it, and what menu items they like, and talk to them about why a healthy breakfast is important.
